About One Happy Family

One Happy Family is a non-profit association based in Burgdorf, Switzerland which is responsible for the community center with the same name on the Greek island of Lesvos. With our center, which is growing steadily and welcomes several hundred people every day, we try to fill gaps which have been created by insufficient humanitarian aid and lack of governmental intervention. Our aim is to give a piece of dignity and self-determination back to the thousands of people who are stuck on Lesvos. In the center there are at the moment more than 20 projects, many of which have been built upon the request and initiative of the refugees.

The community center is not being built and run FOR the people, but WITH them. Together with people from different nations, volunteers and fled people, it is becoming a community. The people from the camps are not only engaged in building and running but also in idea-finding and decision-making. That’s how we want to give them back some independence, autonomy and a sense of responsibility.

Plans for 2018

We will continue to operate the Community Center, and to run and improve projects in response to the needs of our visitors.

We operate a Bank system for our visitors. While everything in the center is free, for some services like the café, the shisha lounge, the tailor, the barber, the shop or the boutique, we introduced a local currency called the “swiss-drachma”. Every visitor gets a few drachma from the Bank each day and can spend it as they wish. By doing this, we want to give the people a feeling of normality and self-determination in their environment which is often fully determined by others.

Current projects in the center are:
- Barber / Coiffeur
- Café
- Children’s Outdoor Playground
- Child friendly space inside ('The Nest')
- Cinema
- Computer Station
- Legal Advise (by Advocates Abroad, twice a week)
- Clothing Boutique
- Education Center (adult classes are run by OHF, children classes are run by the 'School of Peace')
- Garden (with gardening classes)
- Gym (with different sports classes)
- Kitchen
- Library
- Medical Center (run by DocMobile)
- Shisha-Lounge
- Mini-market for sanitary products
- Outdoor sports area (Volleyball field, basketball court etc)
- Tailorshop
- Women Space (with various activities)
- Yoga Space (with different classes)
- Common room (for different activities as games and arts)

Powered by

This platform is powered by Asterias-Starfish Foundation. We are trying to let every organisation have a clear view of the needs on the island of Lesvos. To give them access to funding when they haven't any, and give to the donors the full information they need, when they want to offer their help.

Let's work together, to cover the needs of this humanitarian crisis, through a transparent platform

About us

Matching needs and offers.

Asterias-Starfish Foundation being on the refugees' crisis field for a long time, came face to face with emergency needs, lack of information and communication. Even now, when the flow is not so big, actually nobody knows the needs of the others. So many times, items are remaining in warehouses and refugees still need them. On the other hand, donors want to offer their help in this refugee crisis, but they cannot find where to channel this help.

We are launching this platform to help us to work more efficiently.  To let every organization have a clear view of the needs on the island of Lesvos. To give them access to funding when they haven't any, and give to the donors the full information they need, when they want to offer their help.

Let's work together, to cover the needs of this humanitarian crisis, through a transparent platform.
