About Starfish

The Starfish Foundation (also known as Asterias-Starfish) started out as a group of friends and neighbours when the refugee crisis began on Lesvos. It was registered with the Greek government as a non-profit organisation in October 2015.

Starfish performed many roles during the early part of the crisis, including registration, creating a reception area near the Harbour, providing food and water, organising bus transport to Mytilini, and running a transit camp in the parking lot of the OXY club.  More than 1,500 international volunteers helped Starfish from 2015 – 2016.

Following the EU-Turkey agreement in March 2016 Starfish responded to the changed situation by focusing on helping the children of refugees and unaccompanied minors. During 2016 Starfish provided food and other types of aid to refugees living in the camps, particularly in Moria and PIKPA. In 2017 Starfish created Needs Hub, which continues to be very successful in sourcing food and non-food items.

Plans for 2018

In 2018 Starfish will continue to assist refugees and local communities wherever help is most needed, whether via Needs Hub or in other ways. This assistance includes transporting unaccompanied minors living in Moria to medical appointments associated with their asylum applications.

Starfish will also administer a program on behalf of the Open Society Institute that will provide small grants to local organisations with the aim of strengthening local communities.

Powered by

This platform is powered by Asterias-Starfish Foundation. We are trying to let every organisation have a clear view of the needs on the island of Lesvos. To give them access to funding when they haven't any, and give to the donors the full information they need, when they want to offer their help.

Let's work together, to cover the needs of this humanitarian crisis, through a transparent platform

About us

Matching needs and offers.

Asterias-Starfish Foundation being on the refugees' crisis field for a long time, came face to face with emergency needs, lack of information and communication. Even now, when the flow is not so big, actually nobody knows the needs of the others. So many times, items are remaining in warehouses and refugees still need them. On the other hand, donors want to offer their help in this refugee crisis, but they cannot find where to channel this help.

We are launching this platform to help us to work more efficiently.  To let every organization have a clear view of the needs on the island of Lesvos. To give them access to funding when they haven't any, and give to the donors the full information they need, when they want to offer their help.

Let's work together, to cover the needs of this humanitarian crisis, through a transparent platform.
